An Indian government program launched in 2010 during the country's Eleventh Five-Year Plan, initially covering 100 districts across 21 states, to prevent and control cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke through early detection, awareness campaigns and support for behavior and lifestyle change. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke, abbreviated NPCDCS, operates under India's National Health Mission with technical and financial support from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and has built out infrastructure including hundreds of district-level noncommunicable disease clinics, district cardiac care units and day care centers, along with thousands more clinics at the community health centre level; by the program's own figures, more than 53 million people have been screened for diabetes and hypertension, with roughly 6 percent found to have suspected diabetes and 5 percent suspected hypertension.
