Iran IraPEN Program

Also Known As IraPEN
Chronic Disease Prevention Program

Iran's national package of essential noncommunicable disease interventions, launched in 2015 as the country's own adaptation of the World Health Organization's PEN framework for primary health care and first piloted in four districts. IraPEN is built around five clinical protocols: integrated screening and management of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia aimed at preventing myocardial infarction and stroke; screening for breast and cervical cancer; screening for colorectal cancer; and screening for asthma and other respiratory disorders including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In its pilot districts the program screened more than 160,000 eligible people at baseline, and a follow-up evaluation of roughly 25,700 of them found measurable, if modest, reductions in ten-year cardiovascular risk scores for both men and women, leading researchers to conclude the program had achieved a real but limited effect that further modification could improve.
