A Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health programme, launched in February 2003, that gives every citizen of the country access to free prescription drugs and other pharmaceutical items for a defined list of chronic conditions, among them diabetes, asthma, arthritis, glaucoma, cardiac disease, high blood pressure, depression, thyroid disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia, epilepsy, high cholesterol and Parkinson's disease. Known as CDAP, the programme makes roughly four dozen drugs available with no age restriction or other eligibility exception beyond citizenship, distributed through a network of more than 250 participating pharmacies nationwide: a patient's doctor writes the prescription on a dedicated CDAP pad, and the patient takes the prescription and proof of citizenship to a participating pharmacy to receive the medication at no cost. Academic evaluation of the programme has found it measurably improved control of type 2 diabetes among patients using it, and the list of drugs it covers continues to be updated over time as the Ministry of Health adds new items.
