Global Buruli Ulcer Initiative

Also Known As GBUI
Eradication and Elimination Program

The Global Buruli Ulcer Initiative is a World Health Organization initiative established to coordinate global efforts to control Buruli ulcer, an infectious disease that causes painless open wounds. It was launched in 1998, catalyzed by a 1997 visit to Cote d'Ivoire by WHO Director-General Hiroshi Nakajima, who identified significant research gaps and a growing disease burden requiring a coordinated international response. Initially funded by the Nippon Foundation, the initiative had grown by 2020 to involve more than forty nongovernmental organizations, research institutions and foundations, working through coordination meetings held in Geneva toward surveillance of the disease, research and development for diagnosis, treatment and prevention, promotion of early detection, and expanded access to antibiotic treatment for people affected by Buruli ulcer worldwide, with particular focus on endemic regions.
