Tanzania National Multisectoral Strategic Framework for HIV and AIDS

A Tanzanian government strategic framework coordinated by the Tanzania Commission for AIDS, a national body created in 2001 to lead the country's multisectoral response after Tanzania recorded its first HIV cases in October 1983 at Bukoba Regional Hospital in the Kagera Region. Successive editions of the National Multisectoral Strategic Framework for HIV and AIDS have set the country's overall HIV strategy since the commission's founding, alongside a national HIV care and treatment plan launched in 2004 that began scaling up antiretroviral therapy nationwide, and the fifth edition, covering 2021-22 through 2025-26, was launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in December 2022 and explicitly adopted UNAIDS's 95-95-95 investment-case approach to focus resources on key and vulnerable populations. Tanzania has cut AIDS-related illness and death substantially since the epidemic's early years even as new infections have declined more slowly, with UNAIDS estimating roughly 1.7 million people living with HIV in the country as of 2021 and adult prevalence around 4.5 percent.
