A national strategic plan published on December 31, 2021 by the Royal Government of Cambodia, in partnership with the World Health Organization and other health partners, updating the country's approach to malaria in light of recent changes in its epidemiological and programmatic situation. The Malaria Elimination Action Framework for 2021 to 2025 commits Cambodia to eliminating Plasmodium falciparum malaria by 2023 and every strain of human malaria by 2025, pursued by detecting, safely treating and following up every malaria case, protecting high-risk populations, strengthening national malaria surveillance and monitoring and evaluation systems suited to an elimination rather than a control effort, and building the capacity of Cambodian health staff, especially at the provincial and operational district level, to manage and sustain the elimination push. By 2025 the framework's implementation had brought Cambodia's annual malaria case count down to just 107, with zero malaria deaths recorded since 2018, putting the country on the brink of formal certification as malaria-free.
