China National Malaria Elimination Programme

Malaria Control Program

China's national campaign to eliminate malaria, which drew on seventy years of integrated interventions before the country was certified malaria free by the World Health Organization on June 30, 2021. Central to the program's later phase was the 1-3-7 surveillance and response strategy introduced in 2012, which set fixed timelines for each confirmed case: reporting a diagnosis within 1 day, confirming it and assessing transmission risk within 3 days, and taking action to contain any onward transmission within 7 days. No indigenous malaria cases were reported in China after 2017, and the surveillance model China developed has since been adapted by Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand, among other countries pursuing elimination.
