Sri Lanka Anti-Malaria Campaign

Malaria Control Program

Sri Lanka's national malaria control and elimination program, which pursued nearly three decades of effort combining disease surveillance, vector control and treatment, including mobile malaria clinics, insecticide treated nets and outreach to displaced populations, despite the country's 26 year civil war. The campaign moved through a formally launched pre-elimination phase in 2008 and an elimination phase in 2011, interrupted local transmission of both major malaria parasite species by 2012, and recorded its last indigenous case that year. The World Health Organization certified Sri Lanka malaria free on September 5, 2016, citing the campaign's sustained combination of parasite focused surveillance and community engagement even in conflict affected areas.

Achieved WHO malaria-free certification in 2016 after decades of intervening resurgence and renewed vector control 1

World Health Organization Global Malaria Eradication Program (GMEP), carried out with Sri Lankan government vector-control services 1
Health GoalSourced to the subject's own account
Eliminate malaria transmission through DDT indoor residual spraying for vector control paired with rapid diagnosis and treatment, later switching to malathion after DDT resistance emerged 1

National (Sri Lanka) 1
Measured ResultsSourced to the subject's own account
DDT spraying cut malaria cases from about one million per year to just 18 in 1963 and 29 in 1964; after spraying was halted to save money cases rebounded to 600,000 by 1968-69, and after resuming vector control with malathion the country eventually achieved WHO malaria-free certification in 2016 1

Entity-backed identity for the program-kind enum value this public health program already carries, resolved to a health practice by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The program-kind fact itself stays on the program unchanged.
