Ethiopia's national programme against malaria, which cut the disease's burden sharply over the 2000s and 2010s, from more than 5 million clinical cases in the early 2000s to about 1 million by 2018, while the share of people with access to an insecticide-treated bed net rose from 1.3 percent in 2005 to 49 percent in 2015. Ethiopia's National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan set a goal of eliminating malaria in districts with an annual parasite index below 10 by 2025 and eradicating the disease nationwide by 2030, and the country declared the start of elimination efforts in 236 selected districts across six regions in 2017. Despite this progress, malaria remains a major threat: Ethiopia recorded more than 7.3 million confirmed cases and 1,157 deaths in 2024, its highest incidence in seven years, which researchers attribute to persistent regional variation in transmission, emerging insecticide resistance, the spread of the invasive Anopheles stephensi mosquito, and continuing health-system constraints.
