Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, First Edition

Exercise Science

The United States Department of Health and Human Services published the first edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans in 2008, the government's first single national statement of how much physical activity adults, older adults, children and pregnant or postpartum women need for substantial health benefit. Its central adult recommendation, carried forward through later editions, is at least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. A 2018 update widened the guidance to children as young as three and tied the case for the guidelines to their economic stakes, connecting physical inactivity to roughly 117 billion dollars a year in healthcare spending and about one in ten cases of preventable early death.
