Peru's national school meal program, created by Supreme Decree No. 008-2012-MIDIS in 2012 under the country's newly formed Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, replacing the school breakfast program formerly run by the disbanded National Food Assistance Program, PRONAA. Qali Warma, a Quechua phrase meaning strong child, delivers a food service designed to reflect local eating habits and is co-managed with participating communities, and by the program's own figures it now serves more than 4.1 million schoolchildren, from early childhood education starting at age three through primary school, across more than 65,000 public educational institutions nationwide.
