A South African government program providing meals to schoolchildren, launched in 1994 as one of the new government's Reconstruction and Development Programme lead projects under the name Primary School Nutrition Programme, and later renamed the National School Nutrition Programme. Conceived to alleviate hunger and improve children's general health, the programme was also intended to raise the quality of education by improving pupils' capacity to learn along with their school attendance and punctuality; it was administered by the Department of Health until 2003, before a 2002 cabinet resolution moved responsibility to the Department of Education in 2004.
