A United States federal nutrition assistance program, commonly known by its acronym WIC, established in 1974 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered through state and tribal health agencies. It provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health and social services for low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, and for infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. WIC serves roughly 6 million participants each month as of the 2020s, and research has linked participation to improved birth outcomes, better infant-feeding practices and improved diet quality among low-income households.
