A French public health plan launched in 2001 to improve the health of the entire French population by acting on nutrition, one of its major determinants. The Programme National Nutrition Sante, abbreviated PNNS, sets the objectives, principles and overall direction of French nutrition policy and works at the level of industry, consumers and research alike, for example by pressing food manufacturers to reduce the salt content of their products, and it treats nutrition broadly, covering not only nutrients, foods and physical activity but also the social, cultural, economic, sensory and cognitive factors that shape how people eat. The program communicates its guidance to the public chiefly through the campaign and website Manger Bouger, translating its public health objectives into practical dietary benchmarks that people can act on in daily life, and it has been renewed in successive editions roughly once a decade, PNNS-2 in 2006, PNNS-3 in 2011, PNNS-4 in 2019 and a fifth edition covering 2026 to 2030.
