A program the Ethiopian Ministry of Health established in 2003 to bring basic health care and health promotion to rural communities by training young women, most with only some prior schooling, as salaried Health Extension Workers stationed in village health posts. Construction of health posts began as early as 2002 in some regions, with posts equipped and staffed through 2004 and 2005 in a collaboration between the government and United Nations agencies. By 2010 the program had trained 33,819 Health Extension Workers, who were deployed to reach an estimated 89 percent of Ethiopian communities.
