Uganda's Village Health Teams (VHT) program, established in 2001 by the Ministry of Health, is the country's national community health worker system linking villages to the formal health system. Each village is mandated to maintain four VHT members, at least two trained in integrated community case management of childhood illnesses, and the volunteers mobilize communities for health services and education; research has found that people in VHT-served communities were two and a half times more likely to use healthcare services, though the program has faced chronic challenges retaining volunteers amid difficult working conditions and limited support.
