An American educator, bookseller, historian and statistician from Massachusetts whose 1850 Report on the Sanitary Condition of Massachusetts became a foundational document of American public health. The report catalogued the state's urban sanitation problems and called for a permanent state board of health, systematic vital statistics registration, sanitary surveys and other reforms that were gradually adopted across the United States over the following decades. Shattuck also co-founded the American Statistical Association in 1839, successfully pressed the Massachusetts legislature in 1842 to strengthen vital records registration, and helped plan the interview schedules used in the 1850 federal census, work that shaped both American public health infrastructure and census methodology. He is commemorated in the name of Boston's Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and is honored among the pioneers of public health on the frieze of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
