Fondo Nacional de Salud (Chile)

Fondo Nacional de Salud, known as FONASA, is the financial entity entrusted with collecting, managing and distributing Chile's state health funds. It was created on 3 August 1979 by Decree Law No. 2763 and operates under the Chilean Ministry of Health as part of the National Health Services System, with its main office in Santiago and regional branches across the country. FONASA is funded chiefly through mandatory contributions of 7 percent of covered employees' monthly income together with state contributions, and serves more than 17 million beneficiaries. The organization describes itself as inclusive, providing coverage without discrimination by sex, gender, pregnancy, pre-existing condition, income or nationality.
