The Raedat Refiat program, whose name means village pioneer, is Egypt's national community health worker program, established by the Ministry of Health and Population in 1994 though its roots trace to a 1964 Ministry of Social Affairs effort originally aimed at family planning and population development. The program has grown from about 5,000 community health worker positions in 1994 to more than 14,000 today, with outreach workers implementing the preventive and referral arm of Egypt's national integrated family health strategy at the community level, focused especially on maternal and child health and birth spacing.
