A Bolivian government health insurance program guaranteeing free, comprehensive health services to pregnant women and young children, created by Law 2426, promulgated on November 21, 2002, as part of Bolivia's national strategy to reduce poverty and meet the Millennium Development Goals, and implemented from January 2003 as the successor to the country's earlier Seguro Basico de Salud. The Seguro Universal Materno Infantil, abbreviated SUMI, provides pregnant women with free comprehensive outpatient and hospital care, complementary diagnostic services, medical and surgical treatment and essential medicines from the start of pregnancy through six months after childbirth, and provides the same free comprehensive coverage to children under five years old. In December 2005, Law 3250 expanded the program's reach to cover women aged 5 to 60 more broadly, with the explicit goal of promoting safe motherhood across the whole span of women's childbearing years.

Se crea el Seguro Universal Materno Infantil en todo el territorio nacional, con carácter universal, integral y gratuito, para otorgar las prestaciones de salud en los niveles de atención del Sistema Nacional de Salud y del Sistema de Seguridad Social de Corto Plazo.
Articulo 2, Responsabilidades
El Ministerio de Salud y Previsión Social, como la Autoridad Nacional de Salud, tiene la responsabilidad de reglamentar, regular, coordinar, supervisar y controlar la aplicación del Seguro Universal Materno Infantil, en todos los niveles o establecidos.

Las mujeres embarazadas, desde el inicio de la gestación, hasta los 6 meses posteriores al parto. Los niños y niñas, desde su nacimiento hasta los 5 años de edad.
