President's Malaria Initiative

A United States government initiative launched in 2005 under President George W. Bush, led jointly by USAID and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to reduce malaria illness and death in sub-Saharan Africa and, from later expansion, the Greater Mekong Subregion. It funds insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, rapid diagnostic testing, artemisinin-based combination therapy, and preventive treatment during pregnancy, working alongside national malaria control programs, the Global Fund and the broader Roll Back Malaria movement. Across its partner countries, the initiative has supported the distribution of hundreds of millions of insecticide-treated bed nets and is credited, together with these other efforts, with substantial declines in malaria mortality in many participating countries since the mid-2000s.
