Global Alliance for Rabies Control

The Global Alliance for Rabies Control is a nonprofit organization working to eliminate deaths from canine-transmitted rabies worldwide, established as a UK charity in 2006 and as a United States 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Kansas in 2007. It takes a One Health approach, since dogs are responsible for up to ninety nine percent of human rabies exposures, working with national governments, the World Health Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health, and the Food and Agriculture Organization to coordinate dog vaccination campaigns, disease surveillance, and diagnostic capacity building across Africa, Asia, and other affected regions. The organization estimates that rabies kills approximately fifty nine thousand people a year and causes roughly eight point six billion dollars in annual economic losses worldwide, despite being almost universally fatal but entirely preventable where vaccines are available. It has set a public goal of eliminating deaths from canine rabies by 2030 and has developed practical tools for national governments, including the Blueprint for Rabies Prevention and Control and the Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination.
