A Brazilian Ministry of Health strategy established in 2011, known in Portuguese as Rede Cegonha, or Stork Network, created to expand access to and improve the quality of prenatal care, care during labor and delivery, postpartum care, and child care through the first 24 months of a child's life. The network was built to reorganize maternal and child health care around a protective, women-centered model of care emphasizing privacy and autonomy during childbirth and avoiding unnecessary medical interventions, a deliberate shift away from Brazil's historically high rates of cesarean section and medicalized birth. Implementation rests on two central supports, institutional support intended to make the network a genuinely collective effort among health teams, and structured workforce training, and Rede Cegonha has since been rolled out across Brazil's states and continues to be studied for its effect on reducing maternal and child mortality and improving the quality of birth care.
