A Nigerian federal government program, launched in October 2012 under President Goodluck Jonathan, that set out to reduce the country's high rates of maternal, newborn and child death, with an initial goal of saving one million women and children from preventable deaths by 2015. The initiative organized its work around six health pillars: immunization, malaria control, nutrition, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, delivery of essential medicines for common childhood illnesses, and strengthening of maternal and child health service delivery. It was later reworked into a performance based funding mechanism, Saving One Million Lives - Programs for Results, that pays participating state governments for verified improvements in maternal and child health outcomes.
