A whole-of-nation public health campaign that Singapore's Ministry of Health declared in April 2016, when Health Minister Gan Kim Yong announced the War on Diabetes in response to research estimating the economic burden of diabetes among working-age Singaporeans at more than a billion dollars a year. The Ministry established a Diabetes Prevention and Care Taskforce, co-chaired by Minister Gan and then Acting Education Minister Ng Chee Meng, to coordinate a national strategy built on three pillars: preventing diabetes through healthy living, catching it early through detection and intervention, and improving management of the disease once diagnosed. The campaign brought together healthcare professionals, industry, community organizations and schools rather than operating as a single clinical program, and the Ministry has published periodic progress reports tracking the initiative's impact since its 2016 launch.
