A global strategy formally launched by the World Health Organization on 17 November 2020, following a 2018 call by the WHO Director-General for cervical cancer to be eliminated as a public health problem, the first time WHO had set such a goal for any cancer. The strategy defines elimination as every country reaching an incidence rate below 4 cases per 100,000 women, and sets three so-called 90-70-90 targets for 2030: 90 percent of girls fully vaccinated against human papillomavirus by age 15, 70 percent of women screened with a high-performance test by ages 35 and 45, and 90 percent of women identified with cervical disease receiving treatment, organized around three pillars of prevention, screening and treatment. Analyses published in The Lancet estimate the targets could save 62 million women's lives by 2120 across 78 low income and lower middle income countries, and the strategy has since driven country-level cervical cancer elimination plans and renewed HPV vaccination programs worldwide.
