The Democratic Republic of the Congo's Programme National de Lutte contre la Tuberculose, PNLT, was created by ministerial order in 2002 as a specialized program under the Ministry of Health's General Directorate for Disease Control, with a mission to prevent, detect, treat and monitor tuberculosis in order to eliminate the disease as a public health problem in the country. The program operates at a large scale against a heavy caseload: in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, PNLT recorded 216,690 tuberculosis cases of all forms nationwide, including 120,724 men, 92,498 women and 26,550 children. The Congolese government has continued to invest in the programme's diagnostic capacity, equipping PNLT with 78 modern diagnostic devices and seven mobile units, as its leadership has called for a collective national commitment to ending tuberculosis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by 2035.
