Thomas R. Frieden is an American physician who served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from 2002 to 2009, where he led the city's tobacco control program and pioneered its restaurant trans fat ban, and as Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2009 to 2017, where he oversaw the response to the 2014 West Africa Ebola epidemic. In 2017 he founded Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative that partners with governments to prevent cardiovascular disease deaths and to strengthen epidemic prevention.
