A continental autonomous health agency of the African Union, established in January 2016 by the 26th Ordinary Assembly of Heads of State and Government and officially launched in January 2017. It exists to support the public health initiatives of member states and strengthen the capacity of their public health institutions to detect, prevent, control and respond quickly and effectively to disease threats. Its objectives include early warning and response surveillance platforms, support for compliance with the International Health Regulations, and support during declared public health emergencies. It is headquartered at Haile Garment Square in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and coordinates regional collaborating centres across the continent.
