A private non-profit research foundation in Paris with recognized charitable status dating from 1887, officially opened on 14 November 1888. Its creation followed the success of Louis Pasteur's rabies vaccine, administered to the boy Joseph Meister in July 1885, which brought patients from across the world and raised the need for a dedicated institution. Founded through a public appeal, it remains funded more than one third by public donations, and since 1888 it has studied life at the microscopic level, exploring avenues for vaccines and treatments against disease. Britannica describes it as a world renowned center for research in microbiology, disease prevention and vaccine development.
