John Snow 1854 investigation of a cholera outbreak in the Soho district of London, in which he mapped cases against the location of local water pumps, traced the outbreak to a single contaminated pump on Broad Street, and had its handle removed, a case now taught as a founding moment of epidemiology as a mapped, evidence driven discipline.
