In 2009 Jeffrey Koplan and coauthors published a widely cited paper in The Lancet titled Towards a Common Definition of Global Health, defining global health as an area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide, marking the field's naming shift away from the older term international health.
