A community based nutrition intervention, commonly abbreviated GMP, aimed at improving the nutritional status and health of young children, built from two linked components: growth monitoring, in which a child's weight and, often, height or length are measured on a regular, typically monthly, basis, and growth promotion, the health education, counseling, referral and other action taken based on what those measurements show. As a prevention activity, growth monitoring and promotion is intended to raise caregivers' awareness of how their child is growing, improve caregiving practices, increase demand for other child health services, and serve as a core, recurring point of contact within an integrated child health and nutrition program, with the regular measurement meant to allow malnutrition to be caught and addressed before it becomes severe. By the mid-2020s growth monitoring and promotion was in use as an entry point for preventive child health, nutrition and development services in 178 countries.
