Andean Initiative for Chagas Disease Control

Also Known As IPA
Eradication and Elimination Program

A regional intergovernmental program against Chagas disease, formally created in 1997 within the framework of the Hipolito Unanue Agreement among the health ministries of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, and modeled on the earlier Southern Cone Initiative against the disease that had begun in the same region of South America in 1991. The Andean Countries' Initiative targets interruption of Chagas disease transmission by the triatomine bug vectors Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma dimidiata, Rhodnius pallescens in Panama and Rhodnius ecuadoriensis in northern Peru, together with transmission through blood transfusion, across a zone the initiative estimated held about 12.5 million people at risk and roughly 3 million already infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Control activities in the Andean sub-region have progressed more slowly than in the Southern Cone, and by the program's own assessment, interventions had still not been installed across every area occupied by the target vector species.

Facts
Launch Year
1997 1
Program Status
Active but incomplete: introduced Triatoma infestans persists in parts of southern Peru, and the Andean region's diverse native triatomine bug species continue to complicate full transmission interruption. 1
Sponsoring Body
Coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization as one of the multinational initiatives it coordinates, created within the framework of the Hipólito Unanue Agreement among Andean governments. 1
Health Goal
To interrupt vector-borne and blood-transfusion-mediated transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, across the Andean countries. 1
Geographic Scope
The Andean subregion: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. 1
Measured Results
PAHO-WHO has certified about half of the region's high-risk municipalities as free of transmission by the domestic vector Rhodnius prolixus. 1

Delivers Practice

Entity-backed identity for the program-kind enum value this public health program already carries, resolved to a health practice by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The program-kind fact itself stays on the program unchanged.
