Bangladesh's community clinic program, launched in 1998 under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring the entire population under primary health care, has grown to more than 13,000 community clinics, each intended to serve a population of roughly 6,000 people. The clinics provide maternal and child healthcare, family planning, immunization, nutrition education, health education, communicable disease control and treatment of minor ailments with referral to higher-level facilities, serving more than 400,000 people daily as a public-private partnership in which communities donate land and take part in clinic management; the model has drawn recognition from the World Health Organization and been emulated by other countries.
