A Brazilian government community health promotion program, created in 2011 as part of the country's Strategic Action Plan for Confronting Non-Communicable Diseases, 2011 to 2022, in response to the country's rising burden of chronic disease. The Programa Academia da Saude establishes dedicated public facilities within Brazil's primary health care system, distinct from ordinary clinics, that serve as a community entry point for guided physical activity and other health-promoting practices, with federal financing provided by the Ministry of Health for the construction and operation of local units under municipal management between 2011 and 2020. Though originally focused narrowly on promoting physical activity, the program was redefined in 2013 to broaden its stated objective to health promotion and the production of care and healthy lifestyles more generally, positioning it as one of the largest health promotion community programs operating in Brazil.
