Ghana Expanded Programme on Immunization

Also Known As EPI
Immunization Program

Ghana's national childhood vaccination program, put into practice starting in 1978 following the 1974 World Health Assembly commitment that created the global Expanded Programme on Immunization, with an initial rollout covering vaccination against polio and tuberculosis. Early coverage was minimal, around 6 percent of children under one, hampered by the difficulty of maintaining a reliable vaccine cold chain against an unstable electricity supply, but the programme went nationwide in 1985 with a goal of raising coverage to 80 percent against six childhood diseases. Ghana has since recorded no measles deaths since 2003, achieved certified elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in 2011, and introduced pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, rotavirus vaccine and a second dose of measles-containing vaccine into the programme in 2012, building a sustained record of expanding both the diseases covered and the share of children reached.

Entity-backed identity for the program-kind enum value this public health program already carries, resolved to a health practice by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The program-kind fact itself stays on the program unchanged.
