Healthy People is a United States national health initiative operated by the Department of Health and Human Services that sets nationwide, science-based objectives for disease prevention and health promotion, used by federal agencies, states, communities and private institutions to guide health priorities and measure progress. It originated in 1979 in response to an emerging consensus among scientists and health authorities that national health priorities should emphasize prevention, and has been updated roughly every decade since, through Healthy People 2000, 2010 and 2020 to the current Healthy People 2030, launched in April 2020. Healthy People 2030 is the program's fifth iteration, streamlining more than 1,000 prior measurable objectives to approximately 360 while expanding its emphasis on health equity, social determinants of health, health literacy and overall well-being.
