Helping Mothers Survive

Helping Mothers Survive is a suite of simulation-based training modules developed by Jhpiego, the Johns Hopkins University-affiliated global health organization, together with partners including Laerdal Global Health, to sustain the life-saving skills of midwives, nurses and doctors who care for women during pregnancy, labor and birth. Its first module addresses postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, using low-cost simulators to train birth attendants in the active management of the third stage of labor and in managing bleeding after birth. Studies of its use have found improvements in provider performance, including a documented drop in newborn mortality in the first day of life at sites where it was introduced.
