India Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Programme

Also Known As ANM
Primary Health Care Program

The Auxiliary Nurse Midwife programme, known by the initials ANM, trains and deploys village-level female health workers across India who serve as the first point of contact between rural communities and the country's official health services, regarded as the grass-roots layer of the public health system. The role was reshaped by the Kartar Singh Committee in 1973, which set a staffing target near one ANM per 10,000 to 12,000 people, and by the Srivastava Committee in 1975, which expanded ANMs into multipurpose health workers covering maternity care, child immunization and primary curative care, a change the Indian Nursing Council folded into its training syllabus in 1977 while shortening the course from 24 to 18 months; in 1986 the National Education Policy classified the ANM programme as vocational education, and the 2005 launch of India's National Rural Health Mission further increased the ANM's role as the link between health services and rural communities. It is distinct from India's newer Accredited Social Health Activist Program, the community volunteer programme created in 2005; the ANM is the older, formally trained nurse-midwife cadre underpinning India's rural sub-centre health system.

Entity-backed identity for the program-kind enum value this public health program already carries, resolved to a health practice by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The program-kind fact itself stays on the program unchanged.
