Indonesia Maternal and Child Health Handbook Program

Indonesia's Maternal and Child Health Handbook, known by its Indonesian name Buku KIA, grew out of a cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Japan International Cooperation Agency that began in 1994 and has been implemented nationwide since December 2002. The handbook is a single national record book that follows a mother and child together, recording health information from pregnancy through childbirth and the postpartum period for the mother, and from birth through infancy to six years of age for the child, with dedicated space to flag abnormalities at each stage so that health workers and family members alike can track warning signs over time rather than relying on separate, disconnected records. Indonesia's Ministry of Health has designated Buku KIA as the country's sole official tool for recording maternal and child health services, making it a central strategy for improving the accessibility and continuity of quality maternal and child health care across the country's health system.
