Indonesia National Malaria Elimination Programme

Indonesia's national malaria control effort, tracing back to the Malaria Eradication Command launched on 12 November 1959 and reorganized over subsequent decades under the Ministry of Health into today's Malaria Elimination Program. In 2025 the ministry adopted a Roadmap for Malaria Elimination and Prevention of Re-establishment in Indonesia covering 2025 to 2045, intensifying the country's push toward nationwide elimination by 2030, building on progress that had already brought 85 percent of Indonesia's population into malaria-free areas and 398 of the country's districts and cities, about 77 percent, to certified malaria-elimination status by June 2024. More than 400,000 malaria cases are still reported annually, concentrated overwhelmingly in the Papua region, and the World Health Organization continues to provide technical support to the ministry on strategic planning, case management, surveillance and information systems as the country works toward its 2030 target.
