The International Trachoma Initiative was founded in 1998 by the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to eliminate blinding trachoma worldwide. Operating as a program of the Task Force for Global Health, it manages the allocation and distribution of azithromycin, an antibiotic donated by Pfizer, to national health ministries and partner organizations implementing the World Health Organization's SAFE strategy against the disease. Since its founding it has overseen the donation of more than one billion azithromycin treatments, reaching over 300 million people across 40 countries.
