Kenya Community Health Strategy

A Kenyan government strategy, developed and launched in 2006 to organize and strengthen community-level health activity around a defined structure of community health workers. The strategy organizes Kenyans into community units of roughly 5,000 people, each served by around 50 volunteer community health workers responsible for about 20 households apiece, together with community health extension workers and a community health committee forming the country's formal Level-1 tier of health service delivery, covering home visits, health promotion messaging, treatment of common ailments and protocols for community-based maternal and newborn care. In July 2020 Kenya built on this foundation by launching its first Community Health Policy, covering 2020 to 2030, alongside a Primary Health Care Strategic Framework for 2019 to 2024, formally elevating the role community health volunteers established under the original 2006 strategy play within the country's wider primary health care system.
