Kigali Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases

The Kigali Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases is a global health initiative aimed at mobilizing political and financial resources to control and eradicate neglected tropical diseases. It was announced on 27 January 2022 by Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases and officially launched at the Kigali Summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases on 23 June 2022, hosted by the government of Rwanda, with the African Union and the World Health Organization as primary sponsors alongside Uniting to Combat NTDs. Major signatories included pharmaceutical companies GSK, Novartis, Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, Bayer, Eisai and Gilead Sciences, foundations including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, and nongovernmental organizations including Sightsavers, the American Leprosy Mission and Lepra. The declaration set out to build what its backers called the world's largest public-private partnership against neglected tropical diseases, aiming to reduce infections by ninety percent and eliminate at least one neglected tropical disease in one hundred countries by 2030, targeting an estimated 1.7 billion people affected worldwide, with particular emphasis on women, girls, persons with disabilities and other underrepresented groups, and backed by 1.5 billion US dollars in monetary commitments plus eighteen billion donated doses of medication.
