Malawi's national tuberculosis programme operated as a largely standalone, vertical programme until 2005, when it was integrated more closely with the country's general health services. Since renamed the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Elimination Programme, it launched a National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Strategic Plan covering 2021 to 2025 to guide Malawi's efforts toward eliminating both diseases, building on decades of programme experience that included notable success controlling multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in rural areas of the country.
