The Malaysian Ministry of Health's framework for preventing and controlling noncommunicable disease, developed in line with the World Health Organization's 2008-2013 global NCD action plan and the WHO Western Pacific Regional Action Plan for NCDs, and issued as a successor to an earlier National Strategic Plan for Non-Communicable Diseases covering 2010 to 2014. The current plan, covering 2016 to 2025, concentrates on three disease groups, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and cancer, together with four shared risk factors behind them, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful alcohol use, and it works by improving public awareness, healthcare accessibility and everyday lifestyle choices across the country. The plan incorporates the World Health Organization's own global NCD monitoring targets and places particular weight on building an effective surveillance system capable of tracking and interpreting trends in risk factors, illness and death from these diseases over time, giving Malaysian health authorities a basis for judging whether the strategy is working as intended.
