Mozambique's national tuberculosis program, known locally as the Programa Nacional de Controlo da Tuberculose, a priority program of the country's Ministry of Health. Mozambique is among the fourteen countries the World Health Organization identifies as most affected by tuberculosis worldwide, recording an average of about 11,000 tuberculosis-related deaths annually and an incidence of 361 cases per 100,000 people, with the disease occurring at particularly high rates among people living with HIV. The program adopted Xpert MTB/RIF testing in 2013 as its initial diagnostic tool for children and people living with HIV because of its greater sensitivity and its ability to detect rifampicin resistance, and it continues to work, with support from the United States Agency for International Development and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on expanding case finding and contact tracing, strengthening surveillance, broadening molecular diagnosis, shortening treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis, and improving joint management of HIV and tuberculosis, despite continuing constraints from staffing shortages and slow disbursement of program funds.
