Nigeria's current national malaria control body, created in 2013 when the Federal Council on Health renamed the existing National Malaria Control Programme as the National Malaria Elimination Programme, reflecting a shift in national ambition from controlling malaria toward eliminating it. Malaria control is Nigeria's oldest disease control effort, dating to 1948, and a dedicated Malaria Control Programme established in 1986 had aimed to cut malaria illness and death by 75 percent; the renamed National Malaria Elimination Programme, abbreviated NMEP, is now responsible for setting national malaria policy and guidelines, coordinating the activities of partners and state and local malaria programs, mobilizing resources, and monitoring and evaluating the country's progress toward elimination.
