SEWA Rural, short for Society for Education, Welfare and Action-Rural, is a volunteer-driven healthcare and development organization founded in 1980 in Jhagadia, South Gujarat, India, by surgeon Anil Desai, pediatrician Lata Desai and science graduate Bankim Sheth to improve the health of rural and tribal communities in the region. The organization runs a 100-bed hospital providing round-the-clock outpatient, inpatient and emergency services, treating approximately 70,000 outpatients and 12,000 inpatients each year while conducting roughly 2,800 deliveries and 5,000 surgical procedures. Beyond the hospital, SEWA Rural extends services across some 600 villages in partnership with state government health authorities, conducts research, and runs vocational training for about 200 young people annually through the Vivekananda Gramin Tekniki Kendra, with recognition from bodies including the World Health Organization.
